“Infermieria është një art dhe meqë është art, kërkon një përkushtim të veçantë, një përgatitje të vështirë ashtu si puna e piktorit ose skulptorit. Por, nëse ata kanë të bëjnë me ngjyrën apo mermerin e vdekur, infermierët kanë të bëjnë me trupin e gjallë që është tempull i frymës së Perëndisë. Prandaj infermieria është një nga Artet e Bukura, për më tepër, më i miri nga më të mirat e arteve”.

Florence Nightingale

Nursing has existed in various forms in every culture and its practice has changed greatly over time. Nursing, in the sense it has today, dates back to the time of the Crimean War, when Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910), laid the foundation for professional nursing.

In Albania, in 1910, nursing care was practiced individually by women educated abroad. On December 30, 1921, the first data on the development of nursing as a profession and as a service, with the corresponding education, training and formation, are described. It was the Albanian Red Cross that founded the School of Nurses in Tirana, with programs that trained students, mainly in preventive medicine and in the field of hygiene.

In 1948, the First Medical Technical School opened in Tirana with a more extensive program, where upon completion of this school, graduates were employed as assistant physicians.

Në 1968 në Tiranë u hap Shkolla 3-vjeçare për infermierë pas 8 – vjeçares si dhe kurse 2 – vjeçare, pranë spitalit.

In 1989-1990, 1-year courses for nurses and midwives were opened after high school, equivalent to 4-year vocational secondary education.

In 1994, Higher Schools of Nursing were opened with 3.5 years of study after secondary education.

The Higher School of Nursing in Tirana has been functioning as such since 1994, under the authority and management of the Ministry of Health. This school was established on the basis of a 1-year course for nurses that had existed for several years at the Directorate of Medical Staff at Civil Hospital No. 1, Tirana. It received its status as a Higher School of Nursing (HSN) by Decision of the Council of Ministers in 1996, which coincided with the transition of this School under the authority of the Ministry of Education and Science.

In 2004, the status of SHLI, Tirana was reassessed and it was proposed to grant the status: Faculty of Nursing (FI) at the University of Tirana.

With the inclusion of FI as part of the university structures, it became possible to create departments in this faculty, namely: Department of Preclinical Studies, Department of Clinical Studies and Department of Diagnostics and Rehabilitation.

The academic staff of this faculty has done a colossal job in designing and continuously improving the curricula for the study programs in Nursing, Midwifery and then also in Physiotherapy, Imaging Techniques, Laboratory Techniques, and Speech Therapy, making them the most sought-after programs in the country in the field of medical professions.

The study programs at the FSHMT are aligned and easily convertible with the programs of countries in the region, Europe and beyond.

In January 2013, by decision of the Council of Ministers, the University of Medicine, Tirana, was established, into whose structure the Faculty of Nursing was integrated, under the name Faculty of Medical Technical Sciences (FSHMT).

Today, FSHMT offers Bachelor's level studies in the branches of nursing, midwifery, laboratory technician, imaging, physiotherapy and speech therapy, continuing with second-cycle university studies in Professional Master and Scientific Master, third-cycle Doctorate studies in Clinical Medicine, Paraclinical Medicine and Nursing Sciences in all profiles.

The Scientific Council of the Faculty of Education and Training has, over the years, reviewed and approved a considerable number of textbooks for the students of this Faculty.

The FSHMT also publishes the scientific journal "Contemporary Medicine", which was approved in 2010 by the Ministry of Education and Science.
