Academic Senate

The Academic Senate of the University of Medicine, Tirana.

The Academic Senate is the highest collegial body of the University of Medicine, Tirana (UMT). It is composed of 21 members, including the Rector (Chair), 18 representatives of the academic staff, and 2 student representatives (10%). Academic members must hold the title of “Professor” or the academic degree of “Doctor” (PhD), obtained from universities in OECD or EU member countries.

The mandate of the Academic Senate is four years. The number of members, the mode of operation, and the representation of the main units within the Senate are defined in the statute of the higher education institution.

KEY COMPETENCES OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE

  • It guarantees the autonomy of the higher education institution, academic freedom, as well as students’ rights.
  • It designs the overall structure of the higher education institution and proposes to the Administrative Board the number of staff at all levels of the institution.
  • It approves the institution’s regulations and other acts, in accordance with the provisions set out in the statute.
  • It approves new study and scientific research programs, as well as their amendments and closure.
  • It approves the establishment, reorganization, or closure of the units of the higher education institution based on proposals from the main and basic units.
  • It approves the annual plan of academic and scientific research activities.
  • It establishes the Permanent Commission for the Promotion of Academic Staff, as well as other commissions defined in the institution’s statute, etc.

The Academic Senate exercises its competencies through decisions with direct effect.
